Garda Murdered In Castlerea
A Garda has been killed in Castlerea when his gun was turned on him in the line of duty. May he rest in peace.
Detective Colm Horkan sustained fatal gunshot injuries shortly before midnight last night, 17 June, near Castlerea Garda Station on the main street of the town.
It is understood that the detective, who was armed, was alone on patrol when the shooting occurred.
Investigating Gardaí indicate that Det Garda Horkan left his vehicle to engage with someone when a physical altercation occurred.
Det Horkan called for assistance, but the suspect managed to get his firearm during the altercation and shot him several times.
An ambulance crew which was in the area at the time treated the Garda at the scene, but he tragically passed away.
His immediate family were notified of his death in the early hours of this morning.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Det Garda Horkan, who had worked "with distinction and pride" with An Garda Síochána for 24 years.
In a statement, Commissioner Harris said: "I am deeply saddened by the death of my colleague Detective Garda Colm Horkan."
"Today is a terrible reminder of the significant sacrifices, including the ultimate sacrifice, that Gardaí make to keep people safe."
Det Horkan is the 89th member of An Garda Síochána killed in the line of duty since the force was founded in the 1920's.
A man in his 40's has been arrested in connection with the incident, and a murder investigations into Det Horkan's death has been launched.
The scene has been preserved for a forensic examination and the State Pathologist's Office has been informed.
