MAN WALKING 1,000KM TO RAISE AWARENESS OF COST OF LIVING AND HOMELESSNESS CRISIS

Galway native Alan Sweeny has embarked on a journey on foot from Galway to the EU Commission headquarters in  Brussels saying he wishes to go to “protest against the current Homelessness and Cost of Living Crisis in Ireland.”

In a post made to a social media account Sweeny outlined details of his disillusionment with Ireland’s EU membership saying the “issues involve home ownership decreases, land ownership decreases, child birth decreases, a growing mental health crisis, a growing homeless crisis, debt enslavement as well as watching Ireland’s interests being shafted aside in order to entertain EU policies.”

His course will take him through five countries, Ireland, Wales, England, France and Belgium and is expected to take around four weeks to complete. Sweeney said he needs to cover an average of 35km a day and that he was ‘hitting that at the moment’.

He set out on his journey last Monday when he walked approximately 30km towards Ballinasloe in Galway.

Day two brought him through Tullamore, and as of today he has moved through Roscommon.

“The first leg of the journey will be completed from Galway to Dublin Port, where I’ll then travel to Holyhead in Wales. Once I reach Wales, I will be trekking across England until I reach Dover where I’ll then be travelling to either Dunkirk or Calais in France. It will then take approximately 5 days from Dunkirk to Brussels.”
